– There hasn't been a lot of rest lately for George Mason University's softball team, which welcomes NC State on Tuesday for its first mid-week action of 2017.
The Patriots are coming off a five-game weekend and will be looking for their second win of the season after a few close losses in the Patriot Classic.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
NC State also had a busy weekend at home and went 2-3 in the Homewood Suites By Hilton RDU/RTP Invitational. Two of the Wolfpack's losses came to Mason's Atlantic 10 Conference foe Fordham – 8-7 and 16-2, respectively.
The Atlantic Coast Conference member has played nine more games than Mason in 2017 and the tilt against the Patriots will be NC State's final non-conference contest before entering conference play this weekend. The Wolfpack has already faced seven ranked opponents in the current campaign, including reigning champion Oklahoma, falling 7-5 to the Sooners in California 10 days ago.
Center fielder Jade Caraway is arguably NC State's most dangerous player this season, batting .443 for team-high 27 hits and eight RBI. Caraway has hit one of the Wolfpack's eight home runs this season and has had multiple hits in nine of the 20 games, making her more than twice as consistent as NC State's next best multiple-hit provider.
In the circle, Brittany Nimmo (3-6) has been credited with the majority of the Wolfpack's wins despite having played three fewer games than Peyton Silverman (2-8). Nimmo has pitched 44.1 innings this season and has a team-best ERA of 8.12. She throws for a batting average of .347 and strikes out one batter per game.
