RICHMOND, Va. – The George Mason University men's tennis team could not extend its win streak to three matches, dropping a Wednesday contest to red-hot Richmond at the UR Tennis Complex.
The victory for the Spiders was the team's 15
th straight and kept UR's league record unblemished.
Richmond improves to 16-2 (2-0 A-10) while the Patriots fall to 7-7 (1-3 A-10).
"Richmond was too good today," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "We came out with energy but a few key points didn't go our way and we lost the energy too quickly to stay with this strong of a team. We have the ability to hang with these teams, but if we want to win, we have to play for the team in tough moments, not get down on ourselves when things don't go our way."
The Spiders took the doubles point, then were victorious in the six singles matches.
At No. 3 singles, freshman
Jakob Nielsen won the first set 6-3, but Richmond's Troy won the next two frames to pull away in the match.
Junior
Daniel Gutierrez tied his match at No. 5 up in the second set with a 6-3 win, but his opponent outlasted him in the third frame, 10-6.
"We have a great chance to bounce back against another very tough team in Georgetown Thursday," Davis said. "We're excited to get back to work."
The Patriots and Hoyas will do battle Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Mason Tennis Complex.
