FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team wrapped up its three-match homestand with a 6-1 setback to cross-Potomac foe Georgetown on Monday afternoon inside the Mason Tennis Complex.
Georgetown improves to 9-4, while the Patriots fall to 9-7.
"We battled hard today but fell to a very deep Hoyas team," head coach
Stephen Curtis said. "I was pleased with our continued improvement in certain areas."
The Hoyas won all three doubles matches, although Mason's No. 1 team of
Sydney Green and
Rachel Lee went the distance in a 7-6 decision.
In singles, Georgetown took the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches to build a 4-0 advantage.
The Hoyas clinched the match with wins at No. 5 and No. 6, but Mason got on the board at No. 4 singles.
Rachel Lee grabbed the victory in a marathon affair over the Hoyas' Goonson. Lee dropped the first set, 6-4, but rallied to win the second set in a tiebreak (7-6; 7-5 tiebreaker). In the third set, Lee prevailed to pick up the point for the Patriots
At No. 6 singles,
Nicole Haigwood also went to a third set, but fell 6-10 in the final frame.
Mason now hits the road for a pair of A-10 contests in greater Philadelphia. The Patriots play at La Salle on Saturday (6 p.m.) and at Saint Joseph's on Sunday (10 a.m.).
