FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University men's tennis team took down a strong Longwood squad by the score of 4-3 on Saturday afternoon inside the Mason Tennis Complex.
At times a thorn in the side of the Green & Gold this season, the Patriots executed in doubles action and took the point, which would end up proving crucial in the narrow 4-3 victory.
With the victory, Mason improves to 7-6 on the year while Longwood drops to 9-3.
"The guys brought the momentum from our win Friday and it showed in the doubles," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "We had great energy and movement and that's what gave us the win. It's awesome to see the guys' hard work starting to show through. We still have a ways to go. We got some good insight on new things to work on this week in practice."
Mason led off the doubles point with a victory at the No. 2 position, as
James Lange and
Jakob Nielsen won 6-3 over their Lancer counterparts.
Longwood took No. 1 doubles, 7-6, to even up the action, 1-1.
As they have all year long,
Andrew Curtis and
Edward Ayers took control at No. 3 and delivered the victory to the Mason doubles unit with a 6-4 win. The duo has won its past four doubles matches.
Longwood tied the match up at 1-1 with a victory at No. 2 singles.
Junior
Daniel Gutierrez put the Patriots back up, 2-1, after winning at No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-3). He is 2-0 in singles action during Mason's weekend homestand.
Curtis came through yet again at the No. 6 spot, winning in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) to put Mason ahead, 3-1. The Springfield, Va., product is now 4-2 at No. 6 singles this season.
The Patriots clinched the match soon after, with
Jakob Nielsen defeating Longwood's Julian Farthing, 6-3, 6-4.
Mason now hits the road to take on A-10 foe Richmond on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
