Patriots Visit Mount St. Mary's Tuesday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team is back on the diamond for a midweek contest on Tuesday, facing Mount St. Mary's at E.T. Straw Family Stadium in Emmitsburg, Md.  The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

The Patriots dropped the final game of their three-game series against Canisius 7-1 on Sunday afternoon at the North Main Athletic Complex in Holly Springs, N.C.

Mason (7-13) fell behind in the top of the first inning when Canisius scored a pair of runs with two RBI singles to take a 2-0 lead.  The Golden Griffins added single runs in both the second and fourth innings to double the advantage to 4-0.

Mason scored its lone run of the game in the seventh when junior Frank Sturek reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to third on a single by classmate Tyler Nelin and scored on an error to make the score 4-1.

In the eighth, Canisius sent eight batters to the plate and scored three runs on two hits, including a bases-clearing double off the right field wall to make it 7-1.

Senior Brock Hunter (1-2) suffered the loss.  Sophomore Bryce Nightengale tossed 3.2 scoreless innings and allowed just two singles with four strikeouts.

Nelin has a .321 average and leads the team in home runs (5), hits (25), doubles (8) and is second with 17 RBI.  Junior Trevor Kelly is batting .311 and his three home runs are second-most on the team.  Junior Michael Smith has a .294 average, leads the team with 20 runs scored and is second on the squad with five doubles.

The Patriots have hit at least one home run in seven of the last eight games.  Nine players have hit at least one home run so far this season.

Mason is 9-2 all-time against Mount St. Mary's including a 2-1 record against the Mountaineers on the road.  The two teams last met during the 2015 season, with the Patriots holding the Mountaineers to just four hits in an 8-0 win at Spuhler Field. 

MOUNT ST. MARY'S SCOUTING REPORT:

Mount St. Mary's was 11-37 overall last season and finished 8-24 against Northeast Conference opponents.  The Mountaineers went 4-16 at home and 7-21 on the road during the 2016 campaign.

The Mountaineers will be playing their first home game of the season on Tuesday when they host the Patriots. 

Mount St. Mary's (0-14) has played all 14 of its games on the road.  The Mountaineers began the season with a four-game series at New Mexico State, played three games at North Carolina A & T, a single game at Duke and a three-game series at both Savannah State and Central Connecticut.

The Mountaineers were limited to four hits in a 4-0 shutout loss to Central Connecticut in NEC action on Sunday.  The Blue Devils swept the three-game series, outscoring Mount St. Mary's by a combined score of 15-1.

Sophomore Patrick Causa leads the team in average (.263), RBI (9) and hits (15).  Freshman Jared Urban is second on the Mountaineers with a .255 average and 14 hits and leads the team with three stolen bases.

STRIKE ZONE: 

Mason is playing at Mount St. Mary's for the first time since the 2012 season, when the Patriots earned a 5-2 win over the Mountaineers.  With Mason trailing in the game 1-0, senior Dan Schafferman hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to put the Patriots in front on the way to the victory.
