DAVIDSON, N.C. – The George Mason University men's tennis team wrapped up a busy week with a 4-2 setback against a strong Davidson team on Sunday in North Carolina.

The Patriots won the doubles point, but the Wildcats responded by taking four of the five contested singles matches to claim the victory.

Davidson improves to 11-3 (4-1 A-10) while Mason falls to 5-6 (0-2 A-10).

"I was happy with how the guys competed today against a very strong Davidson program," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "We showed a big improvement in doubles and clinched the point with good wins at No. 2 and No. 3. We fought hard in singles but fell short in a couple of three set matches that determined the outcome."

Mason opened the match with a powerful showing from the No. 2 doubles tandem of Jakob Nielsen and Jimmy Lange. The duo took down Davidson's Chaudhry/Riazzi tandem by a score of 6-1.

At No. 3 doubles. Eddie Ayers and Andrew Curtis also won with a 7-5 decision to clinch the doubles point. The duo improved to 4-4 in dual doubles action this season.

Davidson won the No. 3 and No. 1 singles matches to pull ahead in the contest, 3-1.

Junior Daniel Gutierrez evened up the match 2-2 with a gutsy effort at the No. 4 position. He won his match in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 7-5) to improve to 3-3 at No. 4 this year.

Andrew Curtis took the second set the distance (7-6) at No. 6 singles but dropped the match as Davidson moved ahead, 3-2.

The Wildcats clinched the match with a victory at No. 2 singles. In that matchup, Nielsen dropped the first set, but rebounded to take the second frame, 6-3. Davidson's Hager won the third set, 6-3.

"The areas we've been working hard to improve definitely showed today, but we still need to be tougher on pressure point situations," Davis added. "We're excited to get back to work and feel like we are very close to breaking through to another level as a team."

The Patriots are back in action Friday at 3 p.m. with a home contest against A-10 foe Duquesne.
