HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The George Mason University men's tennis team powered past IUPUI 5-2 to win its third straight match on Wednesday at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center.
The Patriots (5-4) won the doubles point, then won three of the first four singles matches to clinch their second victory at the PTR Springfest.
"We pulled through in the doubles today and that gave us momentum to close out IUPUI in singles," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "We had great energy and battled for every point. We will use this as confidence before our two upcoming matches that will be against very strong opponents."
Mason's tandem of
Pally Ray and
Daniel Gutierrez improved to 4-1 in dual doubles action in 2017 with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles to kick off the day.
With doubles tied 1-1, Eddie Ayers and
Andrew Curtis went the distance and won their match at the No. 3 spot, 7-6, to clinch the point for the Green & Gold.
"It was great to see the doubles area we've been working on show the improvement, but we still have a ways to go before we get into our stretch of A-10 matches," Davis said.
IUPUI took the No. 1 singles point to knot the match at 1-1, but the Patriots went up 2-1 after a straight sets win at No. 5 by
Daniel Gutierrez (7-6, 6-1).
Eddie Ayers then made it 3-1 with a 7-5, 6-4 victory at the No. 4 position. Ayers has now won five matches in a row during the dual season.
Junior
