HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The George Mason University men's tennis team kicked off the PTR Springfest with a victory, knocking off Edinboro 4-3 on Monday morning at Chaplin Park.
The Patriots (4-4) dropped the doubles point, but won four of six singles matches to pick up the match victory.
With the setback, Edinboro falls to 7-2.
"I give credit to our guys for fighting through the cold and somewhat tough conditions today, but it's disappointing that we didn't play our doubles at the level I know we are capable of" head coach Jimmy Davis said. "We will continue to work on our weak points and make improvements. We have a great opportunity to put it to the test with four more matches this week. The guys fought hard in singles and won most of the key points to help us win the match. We're excited to get back to work."
Mason dropped the first and second doubles points, but grabbed a win in the third behind the strong play of
Andrew Curtis and
Alexis Pinsonneault (6-3).
In singles action, Mason picked up victories at the No. 2, 3, 5 and 6 positions.
Junior
Pally Ray improved to 3-1 at the No. 2 spot with a straight sets win (7-5, 6-4) over Edinboro's Daniel Fernandez.
Jakob Nielsen won easily at No. 3 singles (6-2, 6-3), while
Edward Ayers also dispatched of his opponent in straight sets at the No. 5 position (6-1, 6-1). Ayers is a perfect 5-0 at the No. 5 spot in 2017.
In addition to his doubles victory, Curtis also captured his singles match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Edinboro's Kolja Hein.
Mason's second match of the day, scheduled for 3:30 p.m. vs. Charleston (W. Va.) was postponed. The Patriots will look to make it up during their week in Hilton Head.
Next up, Mason battles IUPUI on Wednesday at 8 a.m.
