FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason University men's tennis team (2-2) won its second-straight match Friday, knocking off Mt. St. Mary's 5-2 in a Friday home match.
The Patriots swept the doubles point for the second-consecutive contest, then won four of six singles matches to claim the victory.
"The guys pulled off a hard-fought win. Thr Mount came ready to compete and pushed us to three sets in most of the singles matches," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "We have a very young, talented and hungry team. Matches like these will make us more mentally tough for A-10s."
In doubles action, the teams of
James Lange/
Jakob Nielsen (6-3) and
Pally Ray/
Alexis Pinsonneault (6-2) cruised to victories. At No. 2 doubles,
Andrew Curtis and
Edward Ayers won 7-6 in tiebreak fashion.
Ray took the No. 1 singles spot for the first time during the dual season and put together a strong performance after dropping the first set 6-0. Unphased by the start, the Alpharetta, Ga., product rattled off the next two sets, 6-2 & 6-2, to win his match.
Nielsen needed just the minimum to take care of his Mountaineer counterpart at No. 2 singles, taking the two sets 6-0 and 6-4.
Pinsonneault, like Ray, dropped his opening set (2-6), but claimed the next two 6-4 and 6-4 to win at the No. 4 position.
At No. 5 singles, Curtis took the first set 6-2, then dropped the second 6-4, but claimed the third set in extra games, 10-7.
"Pally, Jakob and Alexis all pulled out three set victories," Davis added. "The more experience they get in tough situations like this, the more they will improve. We're excited to get back to work and prepare for another good opponent, Liberty University, on Feb. 10."
The Patriots and Flames will play their Feb. 10 match at 11 a.m. at Montclair Country Club.
