FAIRFAX, Va. – A busy indoor track and field schedule at the George Mason Field House came to a close on Sunday.
The George Mason men's and women's track and field teams had several individuals unleash strong efforts at the Mason Last Chance Meet at the Field House. It served as the fourth and final meet of the indoor season at the Field House before the Patriots begin the outdoor track and field season in three weeks.
"This one is always a good one to cap off the season with," Mason head coach
Andrew Gerard said. "For most of the guys and ladies, we go into outdoor mode after this. It is, 'All right, let's wrap up indoors with a bow, get last things done and then next week we move to outdoors.'"
On the women's side, junior
Shelby Garnand, fresh off winning the gold medal last week at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships, which were also hosted at the Field House, once again led the charge. She cleared 3.63 meters (11 feet, 10 ¾ inches) to finish first.
Junior
Chantel Richardson won the long jump with a leap of 5.61 meters (18 feet, 5 inches). She was coming off winning the silver medal in the long jump at the A-10 Championships last week. Junior
Nhautrey Brown won the triple jump with a leap of 12.11 meters. Freshman
Sarah Richart placed second in the 3,000-meter run with a personal-best time of 10:37.91.
On the men's side, freshman Maurice Goode won the 500-meter dash with a personal-best time of 1:07.53. Freshman
Ben Taylor took third in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 50.52.
"It is the last chance for people to do the indoor events one more time if they didn't do something they wanted to up to this point," Gerard said. "They wanted to correct something from last week or it was a chance for our kids who didn't get to compete at the conference meet, didn't get to put on the uniform last week to have another opportunity… We had some good things get accomplished this weekend."
Junior
John Seals had a light day after winning three gold medals at the A-10 Championships. Seals placed fifth in the pole vault – third among collegiate participants – with a mark of 4.87 meters.
Seals sits in good position to qualify for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 10-11 in College Station, Texas. He currently holds the 12th best score in the heptathlon in the country this season. He scored 5,794 points (converted for track size) last week in winning the gold at the A-10 Championships and setting the Atlantic 10, George Mason and Field House records. The top 16 in the country qualify for the national indoor championships. Sunday marks the last day to qualify for the meet.
The Patriots will begin the outdoor season the weekend of March 17-18 and spread out for three meets – the VCU Invitational, the William & Mary Tribe Open and the Hurricane Invitational in Miami, Fla.
