FAIRFAX, Va. – A week after hosting the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships, the George Mason Field House will welcome in several hundred more student-athletes.
The Patriots host the Mason Last Chance Meet on Sunday at the Field House. Field events begin with the women's long jump at 10 a.m. The men's 60-meter dash kicks off the running events at 11 a.m.
More than 350 student-athletes are expected to attend from 38 schools, including Atlantic 10 rival Richmond, Maryland, American, Charlotte, Delaware, James Madison and William & Mary.
"With the big emphasis on the A-10 Championships, this week will serve as a chance for very selective group of athletes to get last things done for the indoor season before we fully move into outdoors," Mason head coach
Andrew Gerard said. "The individuals that did not compete for us at A-10's and a few that did will represent us this weekend, but the majority will be on the sidelines just getting back going after the big emotional and mental build up for the championships."
While this serves as the last indoor meet of the season for many student-athletes, as the name suggests this meet also serves as a "last chance." Qualifying marks for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 10-11 in College Station, Texas, close on Sunday night.
One of the more difficult meets to qualify for, the national meet takes only the 16 best marks or times in each event in the country and just the top 12 in the relays. George Mason junior
John Seals currently ranks 10th in the nation in the heptathlon after he set Atlantic 10, Field House and program records by scoring 5,770 points (converted to 5,794 for track size) last weekend at the A-10 Championships. It was one of three gold medals for the Springfield, Va., native, who also won the 60-meter hurdles and the high jump.
