ANNAPOLIS, Md. – For the second time in as many days, the George Mason University men's tennis team took its match to the final point, but could not come away with the win, falling at Navy 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.
Just a day after taking Liberty to the sixth and final singles match, Mason's Saturday contest again came down to a final singles affair. But Navy was able to grab the victory at the No. spot to take the win.
"These two matches this weekend were tough losses for us, but the experiences will make us stronger in the long run," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "We need to amp up our intensity in practice and focus on pressure points/doubles play. I'm happy with how our guys competed and am very confident we'll get over this wall. We're excited to get back to work."
Mason dropped two of three doubles matches as Navy clinched the point. The Patriots' duo of
Pally Ray and
Daniel Gutierrez won at No. 1 doubles, 6-1. That duo is 2-0 in dual match doubles this season.
In singles, Mason tied it up quickly after Ray dominated his matchup at the No. 2 position. The Alpharetta, Ga., product won in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) and is now 3-1 in dual singles matches in 2017.
Navy's Greg Durham defeated Gutierrez at No. 4 singles to give Navy a 2-1 lead, but Mason knotted it up at 2-2 after a straight sets win from freshman
Edward Ayers (6-0, 6-4) at No. 5. Ayers is a perfect 3-0 at the No. 5 position this season.
Mason went up 3-2 late in the match, as freshman
Alexis Pinsonneault took down Navy's Joshua Martin 7-5, 6-1, to win at the No. 6 spot.
From there, Navy won the final two singles matches of the day to take the 4-3 win. Aries Wong defeated freshman
Jakob Nielsen in three sets (6-3, 1-6, 6-4), while Thomas Pecor defeated
James Lange at No. 1 (3-6, 6-4, 6-1) to clinch the victory.
Mason now takes an eight-day competitive break before returning to action next Sunday (Feb. 19) with a match at Mary Washington. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
