FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University rowing program hosts its annual fall regatta on Saturday when the Patriots hit the water for the Head of the Occoquan at Sandy Run Regional Park.
Mason's Varsity 8+ begins things for the Green & Gold at 11:40 a.m., following by the Novice 4+ race at 11:50 a.m.
The Patriots' Novice 8+ makes waves at noon, while the Lightweight 4+ wraps things up at 2:30 p.m.
Mason will be suiting up against a number of programs that the team's student-athletes faced back in October at the Navy Day Regatta. That group includes a speedy George Washington squad, as well as Georgetown, Delaware, Robert Morris, Pittsburgh, La Salle and a number of other schools.
"We changed our lineup in the Varsity 8+, so it'll be a little more of an aggressive race. For that boat and the 2V8+, the goal will be to close the gap. They've made improvements, and we'll be measuring ourselves based on competition from a few weeks ago. We've made some good strides over the past couple weeks."
At the Navy Day Regatta on Oct. 14, the Patriots performed well at one of the nation's premier fall events. Mason's Varsity 8+ boat finished a solid ninth out of 26 programs in its afternoon competition. The Patriots finished ahead of boats from Saint Joseph's, Temple, La Salle, Army and Delaware, among others.
In addition, Mason's Lightweight 4+ took to the water and usurped Philadelphia school La Salle by close to seven seconds in the 4000-meter race to claim victory. The boat began the day for Mason with a win (17:16.94) and set the tone for a strong afternoon on the water. Mason will matchup with the Explorers in a rematch this Saturday.
The Head of the Occoquan marks Mason's final event of the fall for its Varsity boats. Mason's novice student-athletes will return to the water on Nov. 11 for the Frostbite Regatta in Mercer, N.J.
