WASHINGTON, D.C. – The George Mason men's and women's swimming teams opened the 2017-18 season with first place finishes at the Potomac Relay Invitational held at American University on Friday.
Mason won 15 of the 18 events overall during the afternoon against teams from American, Georgetown and Howard. The Patriots women's team claimed seven of nine events, while the men's team won eight of nine relays.
On the women's side, seniors
Amy Tansill and
Dorothy Reilly, along with junior
Marla Albanese and sophomore
Hannah Ikenberry began the day with a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.84).
Sophomore
Rachel Chalsma combined with Reilly and Albanese to win the 300-yard butterfly relay (2:57.31). The trio of junior
Theresa Cotter, Ikenberry and Reilly touched the wall first in the 300-yard backstroke, winning by nearly five seconds (2:56.59).
Senior
Allison Barahona, freshman
Shannon Glesing and Tansill took the top spot in the 300-yard breaststroke relay (3:24.03), while Reilly, Tansill, Barahona and senior
Rachel Williams won the 400-yard medley IM relay (4:12.35).
Freshman
Erica King and Ikenberry swam to a first place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle relay (10:34.57).
On the men's side, seniors
Matthew Lynch and
Alec Morin along with sophomores
Ryan Donnelly and
Christopher Stankiewicz won the 200-yard medley relay by nearly three seconds (1:35.75). Senior
Steven Craig, junior

Bradley Downs finished first in the 800-yard freestyle relay by over 13 seconds (7:04.66).
The Mason trio of Lynch, Morin and freshman
Andres Alarcon swam to a first place finish in the 300-yard butterfly relay (2:33.09), while sophomore
Logan Eubanks, Donnelly and Burton touched the wall first in the 200-yard backstroke relay (2:39.50).
In the 300-yard breaststroke relay, Craig, Stankiewicz and freshman
Wallace Watkins took first place (2:59.96). The men's team also won the 400-yard medley IM relay (3:38.89), 500-yard freestyle relay (4:12.61) and the 1000-yard freestyle relay (9:36.07)
The Patriots are back in the pool against Delaware at 1 p.m. on Oct. 14 in Newark, Del.
