RICHMOND, Va. – Facing Atlantic 10 opponents for the first time this season, the George Mason men's swimming and diving team leads Davidson 132-70, while the women's team fell to Richmond 170.5-123.5 on the first day of competition at the Richmond Duals in Richmond, Va.
The Mason men's team won eight individual events and holds the lead over the Wildcats after day one of the two-day event.
Sophomore
Attila Kiss won the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:01.01) at the Richmond Duals for the second straight year. Senior
Steven Craig placed third in the event (16:10.36).
The Patriots swept the top three spots in the 200-yard butterfly. Senior
Matthew Lynch won the event (1:51.99), freshman
Andres Alarcon was second (1:53.10) and freshman
Devin Truong placed third (1:55.10).Â
Mason put on a show in the 200-yard IM, with the top three Patriots separated by less than a second. Lynch touched the wall first (1:56.09), Craig was second (1:56.47) and Truong finished fourth (1:56.87).
Senior
Alec Morin claimed the top spot on the podium in the 50-yard freestyle (21.02) at the Richmond Duals for the second year in a row. He lowered his winning time by 30 seconds. Morin also swam to a first place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (45.94).
In the 200-yard backstroke, sophomore
Ryan Donnelly was first (1:51.37) with classmate
Logan Eubanks finishing right behind in second place (1:53.88). Junior
Nicholas Burton placed fourth in the event (1:57.75).
A trio of Mason freshmen finished less than three seconds apart to dominate the 200-yard breaststroke.Â
Wallace Watkins won the event (2:10.68),
Michael Pettinichi finished second (2:12.53) and
Dylan Peck was fourth (2:13.32).
The combination of Eubanks, Lynch, Morin and sophomore
Christopher Stankiewicz gave Mason the win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:33.81). Morin and Stankiewicz, along with freshmen
Bradley Downs and
Drake Moretz, combined to finish second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:07.95).
On the women's side, Mason finished first in four events but fell to Richmond on Friday.
Mason senior
Dorothy Reilly won the 100-yard butterfly (57.09), while sophomore
Rachel Chalsma was third in the event (59.54). Reilly also took the top spot in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.27) for the second straight year at the Richmond Duals.
Reilly nearly won a third event, placing second in the 200-yard IM (2:08.92) by less than a second.
Senior
Amy Tansill swam to a first place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.29).Â
Freshman
Erica King finished fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:05.14) and sophomore
Hannah Ikenberry notched a second place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.80).
Mason took the top two spots in the women's 400-yard freestyle relay. The combination of Albanese, Chalsma, freshman
Shannon Glesing and senior
Rachel Williams finished first (3:36.06). Ikenberry, sophomore
Melissa Carroll and juniors
Sidney Owens and
Christina McLemore were second (3:43.60).
The Patriots are back in action for the final day of competition on Saturday, with the men's team continuing their dual meet against Davidson while the women's team will also face the Wildcats.Â
Diving is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Robins Center Natatorium and swimming is slated to begin with the 1,650-yard freestyle at 10:15 a.m. at SwimRVA in Richmond, Va.
