Patriots Sweep Delaware in First Road Meet

NEWARK, Del. – The George Mason swimming and diving teams swept Delaware in the first dual meet of the season on Saturday at Rawstrom Natatorium in Newark, Del.  Mason's women's team defeated the Blue Hens 151-149 with the final event of day deciding the meet, while the men's team recorded a 196-104 victory.

On the women's side, the Patriots won 12 events including the opening 200-yard medley relay, where senior Amy Tansill and juniors Marla Albanese, Theresa Cotter and Dorothy Reilly combined for a first place finish (1:48.15).  Senior Allison Barahona, junior Sidney Owens, sophomore Rachel Chalsma and freshman Shannon Glesing placed third in the event (1:50.63).

Reilly went on to claim three individual events, winning the 100-yard butterfly (57.50), 200-yard butterfly (2:04.39) and 200-yard IM (2:08.85).

Tansill touched the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.60) with Barahona placing third (1:06.68).  In the 200-yard breaststroke, Barahona took first (2:25.95) and Tansill was second (2:26.63).

Sophomore Hannah Ikenberry posted one of her three individual victories in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:28.88), while freshman Autumn Boxley finished fourth (10:56.29). 

Ikenberry also swam to first place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.27) and the 100-yard backstroke (59.05).

In the deep end of the pool, freshman Marina Toone earned the top spot in both springboard events in her first collegiate meet.  She finished first in the one-meter dive with a score of 208.05 and won the three-meter dive with a score of 248.03.  Junior Lydia Alexander finished third in the three-meter springboard diving event (164.55).

In the final event of the afternoon, the combination of senior Rachel Williams, Albanese, Chalsma and Glesing finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:37.04) to secure the win for the Patriots.

On the men's side, the Patriots won 11 events including both relays.

Mason started fast when seniors Matthew Lynch and Alec Morin along with sophomores Logan Eubanks and Christopher Stankiewicz combined to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:34.37).  Junior Michael Pettinichi, sophomore Ryan Donnelly and freshmen Andres Alarcon and Devin Truong placed third in the event (1:36.11).

Morin swam to first place finishes in both the 50-yard freestyle (21.59) and 100-yard freestyle (47.03). 

Stankiewicz posted a win in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.45), while Pettinichi placed third (1:00.09).  Donnelly won the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.48) with Eubanks finishing second (1:56.70).

The Patriots took the top three spots in the 100-yard butterfly, with Lynch placing first (50.63), Truong second (50.94) and Alarcon third (51.93).  The trio also claimed the top three spots in the 200-yard butterfly, with Lynch finishing first (1:51.54), Alarcon second (1:54.85) and Truong third (1:56.38).

Sophomore Attila Kiss posted a first place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:38.77), while senior Steven Craig was third (9:48.00).  Kiss also recorded a second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:43.96), with Craig notching a third place finish in the event (4:44.33).

Mason freshman Drake Moretz won the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.27), edging out classmate Bradley Downs, who touched the wall just over a second later (1:45.97).

In the diving events, sophomore Gerald Hodges, Jr. won the three-meter springboard with a score of 298.05 and placed second in the one-meter dive with a score of 249.75.  Sophomore Joe Amato was third in both the one-meter (204.00) and three-meter (198.98) events.

Downs, Morin, Moretz and Stankiewicz combined to take the top spot in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:09.96).

The Patriots are back in action at the Richmond Duals Oct. 20-21 in Richmond, Va.
