FAIRFAX, Va. – After a successful weekend at home, the George Mason men's track and field team has jumped onto the regional radar.
The Patriots were ranked 10th in the Southeast Regional Men's Indoor Track & Field rankings the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Monday. Mason received 109.01 points in the computer team rankings to move up 10 spots from the week before.
The Mason men finished first at the Patriot Games last weekend at the Field House, scoring 187 points – 114 points ahead of second-place Johns Hopkins. The Patriots totaled 21 top-five finishes.
In addition to the team rankings, Mason's men's and women's teams also had individuals or relay teams in the Southeast regional rankings in eight events.
Junior
John Seals ranks first in the heptathlon after he broke the school and facility record he set last year with 5,582 points. His score was converted to 5,606 points for track size. Seals also ranks sixth in the high jump with a mark of 2.13 meters.
Junior
Nathan Schulte ranks fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:50.41 (also converted) after he placed first among collegiate runners – and third overall – at the Patriot Games. The 4x400-meter relay team of
Bernard Freeman,
Tyler Benson,
Evander Pierre and
Rico Gomez rank fourth with a time of 3:13.30. Redshirt senior
Jimi Tele ranks seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 15.33 meters two weeks ago.
On the women's side, junior
Shelby Garnand is tied for fifth after winning the pole vault on Saturday by clearing a mark of 3.95 meters. Senior
Amber Hawkins sits eighth in the region with a time of 17:14.03 (converted time) on Friday. The 4x400-meter relay team of
Sharon Dorsey,
Sarah Moore,
Ashley Lewis and
Caela Williams also ranks eighth as they ran a time of 3:47.86 at the Liberty Kickoff more than a week ago.
The Patriots are back in action this weekend, splitting up in Boston to compete at the Crimson Elite and Scarlet & White Invitationals.
