Men's Track & Field 1/29/2017 12:43:00 AM

FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University's track and field teams started strong on Friday and continued the momentum on Saturday to sweep the Patriot Games, which took place in the George Mason Field House.

After taking the lead after Friday's four events of the heptathlon, junior John Seals remained consistent the following day and collected 5,582 points in the event to break the facility and Mason's all-time indoor records (5,152) that he set last year. Seals, who entered the weekend as the No. 4 heptathlete in the nation, finished among the top two in six of the seven events – 60 m dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 60 m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 m run – and left second-place Andrew Bartnett of Johns Hopkins 441 points behind.

Including Seals' triumph, the men's team earned 21 top-five finishes to gather 187 points in the team standings, as many as the other five teams – Coppin State, UMBC, American, Mount St. Mary's and Richmond – combined for.

The successful weekend by the women's team was begun by pentathletes Danielle Maynard and Lynne Eisenberg. Freshman Maynard won the high jump (1.58 m) and long jump (5.22 m) events to finish fourth overall with 3,038 points while senior Eisenberg triumphed in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:26.57 but was ultimately left just out of the top five in the standings and finished sixth (2,890 points).

In addition, Maynard finished fifth in the 200-meter dash (26.67 seconds) for another one of the 19 top-five finishes by the women's  team. The Patriots accumulated 138.5 points and fought off fierce competition from Towson (124.5 points) to win first place in front of home crowd.

Mason won four events aside from the heptathlon on Saturday. On the women's side, junior Shelby Garnand dominated in the pole vault and recorded a personal-best result of 3.90 m to leave the competition at least 40 cm behind.  At the same time, senior Junei Mosley (11.73 m) bested Mount St. Mary's Shantell Kargbeh by three centimeters to win the triple jump event. Senior Ashley Hinton (3.25 m) and sophomore Emily Olson (10.44 m) also recorded top-five finishes in the respective events.

The men's first places came from junior Xavier King (49.21 seconds) in the 400-meter dash and his classmate Grayson Morgan, who triumphed in the 5,000 m run with a time of 15:10.80.

Morgan was followed by juniors Dustin Jutras (second-15:20.83) and Luke Sharkey (fifth-15:25.94). Two Patriots placed among the top five in the corresponding women's event, which was won by Mason alumna Bethany Sachtleben with a time of 16:25.19. Senior Amber Hawkins (17:21.94) finished third and sophomore Carolyn Conley (17:37.12) followed her in crossing the finish line. Overall, Mason had a very strong day in the mid- and long-distance events and gathered 10 additional top-five finishes in events of this sort. Half a second separated Mason freshmen Kyla Carte (fourth-2:56.55) and Isabella Kuhn (fifth – 2:57.09) for the two best collegiate finishes in the women's 1,000-meter run while their classmate Khalilah Hamer completed the mile in 5:18.64 for the fourth-best scored and fifth overall finish. A freshman represented Mason in the top five of the men's mile as well, where Colin Cannon (4:25.02) finished fourth.

Sophomore Blaine Lacey's time of 2:28.85 in the 1,000-meter run was only beaten by professional runners. Junior Nathan Schulte (1:51.99) and sophomore Rico Gomez (1:56.31) met the same fate in the 800-meter run but still fought to top-five finishes in the 30-runner event. In the 3,000-meter race, junior Logan Miller (8:34.23) edged his senior teammate Brent Coulter (8:34.55) in the battle for the second place with junior Trent Lancaster (fifth-8:41.75) also finishing among the top five.

Freshman Maurice Goode and sophomore Bernard Andoh both picked up second places in the men's dashes. Andoh suffered a true heartbreak in the 60-meter event, finishing .01 seconds behind the winner, Joseph Amoah of Coppin State. Goode crossed the finish line in 1:08.57 in the 500-meter dash. Junior Ashley Lucas was the only Patriot other than Maynard who earned a top-five place in the women's short-distance events, finishing third at 60 m with a time of 7.77 seconds.

From the hurdlers, sophomore Kornelius Klah finished second overall with a time of 8.32, but still picked up the maximum points for Mason because both runners ahead of him in the finals ran unattached. Juniors Chantel Richardson (8.90) and Deonna Diggs (9.03) both earned their place to run in the women's final, where they finished back-to-back with third- and fourth-best times, respectively.

Richardson placed a spot higher in the long jump with a best result of 5.50 m to become one of four Mason jumpers to join Mosley and Olson in the top five. 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship silver medalist Raeshawn Bishop (15.04 m) had the best result for the men with second place in the long jump competition. The other ones were senior long jumper Briana Hill (fourth-5.25 m) and men's sophomore long jumper Junias Agyei (third-6.94 m).

Patriots recorded all top-three scored finishes in the men's pole vault competition, which was won by unattached competitor Calvin Pitney (4.90 m). Mason seniors Logan Besougloff (4.70 m) and Robert Yu (4.60 m) followed Pitney with the latter beating out freshman teammate Mark Miller (4.60 m) to the third place only because he reached the threshold in fewer jumps. The same tiebreaker denied a fourth Patriot, freshman Josh Grant, a place in the top five, even though Grant had the same best score as Hagerstown Community College's representative Jacob Pryor (4.45m), who placed fifth.

Sophomore Isabel Guide was the only Mason thrower who recorded a top-five finish this weekend. Her final score of 12.75 m earned her fifth place in the weight throw event.

Only the women's team participated in the 4x400-meter relay on Saturday. The Patriots' quartet, composed solely of underclassmen – Carte, Kuhn and sophomores Caitlin Kelly and Ciara Donohue – finished in 4:11.40, which placed them third behind the Mount (4:03.81) and UMBC's team (4:09.23).
