MONTCLAIR, Va. – The George Mason University men's tennis team dropped a matchup against East Carolina on Wednesday afternoon at Montclair Country Club.
 
The Patriots proved competitive in doubles play and in a number of singles matches.
 
"ECU is a very strong program and we took two of the doubles matches to tie breaks and two of the singles to three sets," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "We have a young team and the more experience we get in pressure point scenarios, the more we are going to continue to improve with each match."
 
The doubles teams of Jakob Nielsen and Jimmy Lange took ECU's counterparts at first doubles to a tie break before falling, 7-6 (3). Daniel Gutierrez and Alexis Pinsonneault also went to extra points at third doubles.
 
In singles action, Lange took the second set, 6-4, against Freddie McGeehan at the No. 1 spot. He ultimately dropped the match in three sets.
 
Gutierrez won the second set of his match at the No. 5 position (6-3) as well, before falling in the third set.

"The outcome didn't go the way we wanted, but the guys continue to compete and work hard point in and point out. We are excited about continuing to improve as the season progresses."

The Patriots return to action Friday (Jan. 27) with a contest against in-state foe James Madison at Salisbury CC (6 p.m.).
