The George Mason men's golf team is set to host the fifth annual Patriot Intercollegiate this weekend at Laurel Hills Golf Course in Lorton, Va. The 6,897-yard, par 71 course will be a challenge to the Patriots and the 18 visiting teams coming to play this weekend. The tournament is a 54-hole event, with two rounds on Sunday and the final round on Monday, Sept. 26.
In the 2015 Patriot Intercollegiate, the University of West Florida captured top team honors and set a tournament record with a five-under par performance. Towson's Jimmy Grem won medalist honors at nine-under par for the tournament. He started the day at 11-under par after shooting a tournament best 64 in the second round.
Mason earned fifth place marking their best finish in the short history of the Patriot Intercollegiate. Brock Kovach and Eric Edwards led the Patriots with a three-round four-over par and finished tied for 15th overall. Mason's Trevor Tremps finished 21st at six-over par.
This is the second tournament of the season for the Patriots. Last weekend, the Green and Gold finished finished eighth overall at the Eastern Kentucky Intercollegiate.
The Patriots were led by freshman Davis Soderberg with a one-over par 211 to finish tied for 12th overall. Upperclassmen Brock Kovach and Ellis Messian recorded scores of 218 and 219 respectively at the par-70, 6,623-yard course at the University Club at Arlington. Freshman Jeff Wilson rounded out the team scoring with a 220.
