FAIRFAX, Va. – Former George Mason baseball player and assistant coach Dayton Moore has been inducted into the Valley Baseball League Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class.
Moore, who played at Mason from 1988-89 and was an assistant coach for the Patriots from 1990-94, is the General Manager of the 2015 World Series champion Kansas City Royals. He is one of 11 former players, coaches and administrators to earn the honor of being voted into the Valley Baseball League Hall of Fame on the first ballot.
The Valley Baseball League is a collegiate summer baseball league based in Virginia. There were a total of 66 initial nominees. Moore managed the Winchester Royals and was also an assistant coach, winning Valley League championships in 1992 and 1993.
Other inductees included Dave Biery, Jim Lineweaver, Jim Phillips, Bob Wease, Jimmy Key, David Eckstein, Johnny Oates, Charles “Tootie” Geil, John Radosevich, and Mike Bocock. Moore, Key and Eckstein combined to claim a total of five World Series titles, with Key winning with the Blue Jays and Yankees, while Eckstein won with the Angels and was the World Series MVP in 2006 with St. Louis.
“The Hall of Fame is being established to recognize and honor individuals who, by excellence of their VBL achievements or their connection with the VBL as a competitor, coach, administrator, or interested individual, have brought recognition and esteem to themselves and the Valley Baseball League,” said league president and commissioner Don Lemish.
Moore began his professional career with the Atlanta Braves organization in 1994 and was named Assistant General Manager of the Braves in 2005. He has been the General Manager of the Royals since 2006. In 2014, when the Royals won the American League pennant, Moore finished second in the voting for MLB Executive of the Year by The Sporting News.
