FAIRFAX, Va. – Even though Jennifer Nakamura concluded her collegiate career at George Mason last month, she can now add a prestigious academic honor to her resume.
On Friday, Nakamura was named to the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Third Team. The graduate student from Fresno, Calif., was one of 45 Division I women's track and field/cross country student-athletes to earn All-American honors.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Nakamura was one of just 14 honored who had a perfect 4.0 GPA. The distance runner was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team last month. She was also tabbed to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team, marking the third time in her career (cross country and track) she had received such honors.
Nakamura, a three-time Provost Scholar Athlete, earned her bachelor's degree in psychology. She just finished her first year of graduate school at George Mason and is currently working toward her master's degree in psychology with a specialization in school psychology.
She ended her career as the school-record holder in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running a time of 10:52.18 at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships. She finished with the top four times in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in program history. In the last race of her career, she took fourth at the 2016 A-10 Outdoor Championships in a time of 10:52.49, just three tenths off her school record. It also marked her highest finish at a league meet.
