Bronx, N.Y. – George Mason University's softball team started strong but was unable to keep their foot on the gas as Fordham came back to win, 5-4. Even with a victory, the Patriots would not have competed in the Atlantic 10 tournament due to Saint Joseph's and George Washington's victories on Sunday.
The Patriots jumped out to a 3-0 start in the first inning thanks in part to a two-run double by sophomore shortstop Liz Seymour. A leadoff single by senior center fielder Casey Price was followed by a single by senior left fielder Julia Czarnecki that brought Seymour to the dish. Seymour smacked a double into the right center gap with the count at 2-2, giving the Patriots their first lead of the game.
Seymour would come home to score on an RBI single by freshman first baseman Samantha Zaccari, beating the tag on a close play at the plate. Once again, the Rams would fight back in the bottom of the inning loading the bases yet freshman pitcher Marina Vitalich struck out a Fordham batter to end the threat.
Mason would try to add to the lead in the top of the second and had a great opportunity with runners on the corners and redshirt freshman third baseman Jess Middleton up to bat. The Patriots were unable to convert and Fordham was able to get on the board with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame.
Meanwhile in Philadelphia, Pa. Saint Joe's clinched a postseason birth with their second victory over St. Bonaventure on the weekend. This left only one spot remaining for either the Patriots or the Colonials of George Washington. The Colonials ended up beating the Billikens, 7-3, which clinched a spot in the tournament for the hosts.
Fordham would tie the game then take the lead in the bottom of the fourth after loading the bases with no outs. A two-run single up the middle plated the tying runs and put runners at second and third for the Rams. A sac-fly would then give the Rams the lead, 4-3, and another sac-fly gave Fordham a 5-3 lead.
Although Fordham did not score another run in the contest, the Patriots were only able to get a consolation run across the plate in the top of the seventh inning. Czarnecki led off the inning with a single and was brought home after being driven in by a Middleton RBI single. After a strikeout and with Middleton on first, Mason grounded out to end the game and their season.
