Bevy of Patriots Earn All-Conference Honors from Atlantic 10

FAIRFAX, Va. – Before the George Mason women's lacrosse team begins the Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship on Friday, the Patriots were recognized for their efforts during the regular season.

Six Mason student-athletes earned all-conference honors from the Atlantic 10 on Wednesday when the league announced its awards for the 2016 season.

Alexa McGovern earned First Team honors for the second year in a row. Jacquelyn Spalding and Kira Greer were tabbed to the Second Team and freshmen Elizabeth Benedetto and Chachi Kelehan were named to the All-Rookie Team. In addition, Brooke Lorber, Spalding and Greer were named to the All-Academic Team.

McGovern, a midfielder from Sykesville, Md., led the team with 39 goals and 45 draw controls. The junior also tops the Atlantic 10 with five game-winning goals. Her 39 goals tie for fifth-most in the A-10 this season and she ranks third in the league with 2.81 draw controls a game.


Spalding also raked in all-conference honors for the second straight year as she also earned Second Team accolades in 2015. The junior attacker from Riva, Md., leads the team with 51 points. She ranks second with 35 goals and tied for second with 16 assists. She tied her own school record with nine points (a career-high six goals and three assists) against Saint Joseph's on April 24.
Academically, the finance major received the Provost Scholar Athlete Award.

Greer, a sophomore defender from Flemington, N.J., leads the team with 36 ground balls – third-most in the A-10. She also ranks second with 22 caused turnovers and third with 31 draw controls. She scored her first career goal against Richmond on April 3. She also had a career-high eight ground balls against George Washington on April to tie for the 10th most in a game in program history. Academically, the psychology major also received the Provost Scholar Athlete Award.


Benedetto, a freshman goalkeeper from Fairfax, leads the team with 84 saves, a .509 save percentage and a 7.46 goals against average – all ranking in the top six in the A-10. She made a career-high and season-best 13 saves against George Washington on April 1. She has played in 12 games, posting a 9-2 record in 11 starts.


Kelehan, a native of Ellicott City, Md., has also had a sensational freshman season. The attacker ranks second on the team with 45 points and third with 32 goals. Her 13 assists are fourth-most on the team. She has scored a goal in all 16 games of her collegiate career, notching multiple goals in eight. She also scored four goals three or more times, including a career-high five goals twice.


Lorber, a junior midfielder from Bel Air, Md., was named to the All-Academic Team. She was also named a Provost Scholar Athlete. The marketing major also leads the team with 23 assists in addition to 20 goals.


The Patriots (12-4), who tied a school record with 12 wins this season, open the Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse Championship in the semifinals at 1 p.m. on Friday in Pittsburgh. Mason, the No. 2 seed, will play the winner of Thursday's Duquesne-Richmond matchup.
