NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Mason senior Aaron Capitel and sophomore Daniel Gutierrez earned post-season honors today from the Atlantic 10 Conference, which was announced today following a vote by the league's 12 head coaches. Capitel earned a spot on the All-Academic team and Gutierrez was voted on the All-Conference Second Team.
Capitel was named to the All-Academic team for the second consecutive year. He led the Patriots playing from the top singles position with a 7-11 record. The Atlanta, Ga. Native, was 7-12 in doubles competition, including 6-7 from the No. 2 spot. He has earned recognition as a Peter Sterns Provost Scholar Athlete all three years, which requires a 3.75 GPA. The Economics major was also was named to the A-10 commissioners Honor Roll all semesters.
Gutierrez led the Patriots in wins finishing with a 13-9 record, 10-4 from the No. 5 singles position. He has a 7-3 record in his last 10 regular season matches. The San Jose, Costa Rica native won seven of his nine regular season A-10 matches.
VCU senior Michal Voscek and Dayton freshman Jordan Benjamin have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Tennis Most Outstanding Performer and Rookie Performer of the Year. In the same vote, George Washington's Torrie Browning was named Coach of the Year
Voscek, a four time all-conference selection, finished his career at VCU with a 79-49 singles record, including a 33-16 mark from the top spot. The senior from Bratislava, Slovakia was a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and was part of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship team as a freshman, and has competed in the A-10 Championship finals each of his four years.
Benjamin, a freshman from Fairport, N.Y., set a new mark for wins in a season for the UD program, finishing with a 14-5 record, including a 12-4 mark at No. 1 singles. He also helped the team to its most wins in more than a decade (16), and helped the Flyers to an appearance in this year's A-10 semifinals.
Browning took over as interim head coach of both the men's and women's programs in February, leading the Colonials to 14-8 record this season and an Atlantic 10 Championship, the third consecutive title and fifth in the last six years for GW. The Colonials posted a perfect 6-0 mark against conference opponents under Browning's watch this spring.
Joining Voscek on the All-Conference First Team are fellow Rams, Catalin Fifea, Vitor Lima, and Daryl Monfils; Davidson's Shamael Chaudhry, Dayton's Jordan Benjamin and Carsten Fisher; GW's Chris Reynolds, Julius Tverijonas and Danil Zelenkov; Richmond's Jacob Dunbar and Alexandre Felisa; and Saint Louis' David Ferragut. A tie in voting for the final spot resulted in an 13-member team.
In addition to Gutierrez, the All-Conference Second Team consists of Davidson's Artem Khrapko; Dayton's Zach Berry; Duquesne's Corey Robinson; Fordham's Tomas Cosmai; GW's Chris Fletcher and Cahit Kapukiran; Richmond's Canyon Teague; St. Bonaventure's Victor Blanco and Eduardo Irizarry; and Saint Joseph's Kyle Chalmers and Andres Urrea.
The All-Academic team, which is voted on by the league's sports information directors, includes Capitel and five others, including Duquesne's Robinson, Tverijonas and Zelenkov of GW, SJU's Chalmers and VCU's Voscek.
