FAIRFAX, Va. – A pair of meet records headlined strong performances by the George Mason men's and women's track and field teams at the Duke Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Durham, N.C.
Steven Flynn won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:08.15 – more than 18 seconds faster than the previous meet record – and Sharon Dorsey, Sarah Moore, Caela Williams and Sommer Sharpe finished first in the 4x400-meter relay team with a meet record time of 3:43.32.
The Patriots sent most of the men's and women's teams to the Duke Invitational while a handful of athletes competed at the select Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va.
At the Duke Invitational, freshman Rico Gomez also picked up a first-place finish, winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.92. Angel Coburn won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.33.The 4x400-meter relay team of Coburn, Evander Pierre, Gomez and Bernard Freeman also finished first with a time of 3:13.33.
Ayo Raymond finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.65. In the 200-meter dash, Freeman and Junias Agyei finished second and third among collegiate athletes (third and fifth overall) with times of 21.35 and 21.56.
Raymond, Agyei, DaQuan Smalls and Freeman took fourth in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 40.93. Ryan Williams finished fourth in the javelin, and third among collegiate athletes, with a toss of 58.26 meters. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Paul Adam came across the finish line in sixth with a time of 9:22.26.
On the women's side, in the 400-meter dash, Sarah Moore and Sharon Dorsey finished second and third, respectively, with times of 54.62 and 54.92. Jennifer Nakamura placed third and Amber Hawkins took fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Nakamura posted a time of 11:01.81 and Hawkins finished in 11:13.54.
Nhautrey Brown placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 11.98 meters. Isabel Guide took third in the javelin with a throw of 32.32 meters.
At the Virginia Challenge, Talisha Watts tied for eighth in the women's high jump invite section with a mark of 1.71 meters. In the women's pole vault invite, Lindsay Horton placed eighth with a leap of 4.00 meters. Shelby Garnand was eighth in the women's javelin with a toss of 38.99 meters.
On the men's side, Logan Besougloff tied for seventh in the pole vault by clearing 4.55 meters.
