Fairfax, Va. – The George Mason University softball team will take on the University of Massachusetts at Amherst this weekend, in the team's first Atlantic 10 road series of the season.
Mason is coming off of a victory against Towson in which senior pitcher Sarah Kleinfelter and freshman pitcher Marina Vitalich combined for a perfect game. Mason lost game one of the doubleheader 8-0, but rebounded by scoring seven runs in support of their game two pitchers.
The Patriots are 2-1 in A-10 play after taking the first series of the year against Rhode Island last weekend. Mason dropped game one of the series before winning two straight, which gives the team a share of second place in the A-10, only trailing George Washington by one game.
Mason will need to continue their winning ways if they are to keep pace with George Washington and become a team to beat in the conference.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
UMass is coming off of a series loss against Fordham, falling two out of three times over the weekend. The Minuetwomen played the Rams tough splitting the day one doubleheader before dropping game three, 4-0. UMass' best players at the plate are Erin Stacevicz, Taylor Carbone and Jena Cozza. Stacevicz leads the team in batting average with a .355 mark and has a team leading 27 hits while Carbone leads the team with 16 RBI's and six doubles. Cozza leads the team in runs with 18 and is second on the team with a .462 slugging percentage. The Minutewomen's pitching staff is led by Meg Colleran who sports a 2.62 ERA despite a 6-11 overall record. The other two UMass pitchers sport ERA's over seven and have combined to win one game. Mason should prepare to face Colleran much of the weekend considering she has pitched 15 complete games and leads the team in appearances with 20.
