Second-Half Lead Slips Away as Patriots Fall to Duquesne

FAIRFAX, Va. – Despite nearly doubling up Duquesne in shots taken, the George Mason women's lacrosse team let a second-half lead slip away.

Lindsey Tangeman's last-second shot clanged off the post as time expired and the Patriots suffered a 9-8 loss to Duquesne on Sunday afternoon at George Mason Stadium. Mason watched a three-goal lead evaporate over the last 15 minutes as Duquesne scored the last four goals of the game.

Duquesne's Macy Marafioti scored the go-ahead goal with 1:57 left. After forcing a turnover, the Patriots had a chance to tie in the last 30 seconds. Brooke Lorber corralled a loose ball and drew a foul with one second left to set up one final play. At the restart, Lorber passed to Lindsey Tangeman. She fired a shot from about 10 feet away but the ball clanked off the near post as the buzzer sounded.

The Patriots outshot the Dukes 30-17, but reigning Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week Jenna Bishop made 14 saves for Duquesne. Mason (9-4, 4-2 Atlantic 10) scored just eight goals to tie for their lowest output of the season.

“I think we controlled the game. We just didn't finish the game,” head coach Jessy Morgan said. “Our shooting was not good today. I knew it was going to be a big thing. They have a pretty good girl in the cage. She stepped up today and our shooters didn't.”

Mason didn't trail until the final two minutes and led by as many as three goals twice. Chachi Kelehan and Alexa McGovern scored consecutive goals less than a minute apart for an 8-5 lead with 15:21 to play.

But Duquesne (6-7, 4-2) slowly chipped away. The Dukes responded 22 seconds later to spark three goals over in the next four minutes. They tied the game with 10:56 left and then both teams went silent.

Marafioti's goal ended the drought and Duquesne won the ensuing draw control, looking to run out the clock. But Jordan Sdanowich intercepted a pass and drew a foul with 24 seconds left. After Mason called a timeout, the Patriots raced up the field. Tangeman's pass from behind the cage went awry. But Lorber was able to grab the ground ball and draw a foul with one second left to give Tangeman a chance that just missed.

Sdanowich led the Patriots with two goals. Kelehan, McGovern, Tangeman, Lorber, Jacquelyn Spalding and Melissa Lobaccaro also scored. Hannah Warpinkski, Lydia Montanio and Lorber each had an assist. In goal, Elizabeth Benedetto made five saves.

Mason, which had won seven of eight, will try to bounce back on Friday when it plays St. Bonaventure at 4 p.m. in Olean, N.Y.
