FAIRFAX, Va. – Superb performances in the field events highlighted a light weekend for the George Mason men's and women's track and field teams.
Logan Besougloff set a personal best and qualified for the IC4A/ECAC Championships in winning the pole vault to lead the Patriots at the Loyola-Hopkins Track & Field Invitational in Baltimore on Saturday. The men finished second and the women took third.
“It was a very productive weekend,” head coach Andrew Gerard said. “The throwers, especially, took advantage of the opportunity and really did a great job with numerous season bests and lifetime PRs. On an individual level, Logan Besougloff probably had the most significant improvement, hitting the IC4A standard. But there were numerous others who all made nice jumps forward. Bodes well for the coming weeks for sure.”
Besougloff, a junior from McLean, Va., surpassed his previous personal-best of 4.70 meters in finishing first. The Patriots had the top four jumpers in the pole vault with Robert Yu, Alex Shotwell and Trip Chewning finishing second, third and fourth, respectively.
Ryan Williams also set a personal record with a humongous heave of 56.87 meters (186 feet and seven inches) to win the javelin. Senior Justin Little was also victorious, winning the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 46 feet and 8 ¾ inches. John Seals had a pair of second-place finishes, taking second in the high jump and 110-meter high hurdles. Raeshawn Bishop and Little finished third and fourth, respectively, in the long jump.
In the discus, Garrett Friendy had a toss of 44.24 meters to take third. Pat Hodge was second in the hammer throw with a heave of 43.68 meters. Jared Lewis, Friendy and William Sarraf were fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Alec Johnson took fifth in the javelin with a throw of 36.12 meters.
On the women's side, Nhautrey Brown won the triple jump with a mark of 12.01 meters and Junei Mosely finished third in the event. Shelby Garnand also won the javelin with a personal-best toss of 40.48 meters. Lynne Eisenberg picked up a victory in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 16 feet and 4 ¼ inches.
In the discus, Rachel Forder tossed a heave of 44.36 meters to place second. Lindsay Horton finished third in the pole vault with a leap of 3.70 meters. In the hammer throw, Betsey Chilcoat took fifth with a toss of 38.08 meters. Kendra West also took fifth in the shot put with a throw of 12.11 meters.
The Patriots return to action this weekend by competing in the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C., and the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va.
