Fairfax, Va. – After a successful opening weekend of Atlantic 10 play, George Mason University's softball team will make a short trip north for a Wednesday doubleheader against former Colonial Athletic Association rival Towson.

The Patriots overcame a slow start on Saturday and picked up a 4-0 win against Rhode Island in Fairfax to split the doubleheader against the Rams. The Patriots then followed up with a 4-1 victory on Easter to claim third-straight series against Rhody since joining the A-10.

Freshman first baseman Sam Zaccari was at the heart of Mason's success and accounted for six of the Patriots' eight runs in the series with three three RBI and three runs, hitting a combined 4-6 in the two wins.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

After going 19-5 in the majority of its non-conference schedule, Towson began CAA play last weekend in a way identical to Mason. The Tigers suffered a heavy 8-2 loss to Hofstra on Friday, but claimed two 6-5 victories in the remaining games of the series. Towson will continue an eight-game home stand on Wednesday and will look to improve on its 8-3 home record against Mason. An interesting fact is that the Tigers are 5-0 against teams who have also faced the Patriots this season.

Strong pitching has been the backbone of Towson's impressive performances, with Ambar Hickman (7-1), Megan Dejter (8-4) and Blakely Thrower (6-1) each recording at least six wins from the mound. The trio averages just over 2.0 earned runs per game despite allowing a batting average of .359 this season. On the offensive end, Shelby Stracher has caused the most damage to the Tigers' opponents, averaging a team-high .474 at bat and also leading the team in runs (25), RBI (37), slugging percentage (.936) and home runs (10).
