FAIRFAX, Va. – Thirty-five days and six games later, the George Mason women's lacrosse team will once again host Mount St. Mary's.
This time, the teams hope to finish the game.
The Patriots and Mountaineers will play at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at George Mason Stadium in a game that was rescheduled from Feb. 24. The teams played nearly 40 minutes before the second of two lightning delays stopped play in the second half.
The game, which was supposed to be Mason's season opener, was ultimately postponed and rescheduled. The Patriots were leading 9-4 at the time but, due to NCAA rules, the game was not an official game as 80 percent (or 48 minutes) of the game had not been completed. When the teams meet on Wednesday the game will start from the beginning at 0-0.
Mount St. Mary's (2-6) enters having won two of three, including an 18-11 victory at St. Bonaventure on March 20. The Mountaineers are led by senior Molly Morris, who has 15 goals and 11 assists.
The Patriots (4-2) have won two straight, most recently coming off a 17-7 victory at Liberty last Wednesday. Junior Jacquelyn Spalding led the way with a career-high six goals in addition to a career-high three ground balls and a personal-best three caused turnovers. Spalding, who leads the team with 17 goals and 23 points, was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week on Monday.
Freshman Chachi Kelehan (12 goals, six assists), junior Alexa McGovern (12 goals, two assists) and junior Brooke Lorber (10 goals, eight assists) have also gotten off to hot starts to guide the Patriots.
This will be the third meeting between Mason and Mount St. Mary's, with the previous two games coming in the last two years. The Patriots lead the series 2-0, most recently a 10-5 victory last year at Mount St. Mary's.
Wednesday's matchup closes the book on non-conference play as Mason begins Atlantic 10 Conference action against George Washington at 4 p.m. on Friday in Washington, D.C.
