FAIRFAX, Va. – Last week,
Jacquelyn Spalding's career-high day fueled a George Mason scoring flurry and propelled the Patriots to their first road victory of the year.
On Monday, Spalding was rewarded for her standout day, earning Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week honors. The junior set career highs with six goals, three ground balls and three caused turnovers in a 17-7 victory over Liberty last Wednesday.
Spalding, an attacker from Riva, Md., scored four of her six goals in the second half. Her fourth goal of the day was the first of nine unanswered goals by the Patriots, who turned a one-goal lead into a 10-goal rout. She then capped off the spurt with a pair of goals in 30 seconds.
She needed just eight shots, and only seven shots on goal, to set her new personal-best mark. Spalding, a Second Team Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection last year, has scored three or more goals in each of her last four games. She leads the team with 17 goals, is tied for the team lead with six assists and has a team-high 23 points in just six games. Her 2.83 goals per game average ranks third in the A-10.
The Patriots (4-2) return to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at George Mason Stadium to close out the non-conference schedule against Mount St. Mary's. The game was rescheduled from Feb. 24 when Mason's season and home opener had to be postponed due to two lightning delays.
