FAIRFAX, Va. – Mason women's tennis dropped a match to Longwood, 6-1 Friday afternoon at the George Mason Tennis Courts.
Mason's top duo of Brittany Pilkington and Sydney Green upended Longwood's pairing of Fallon Burger and Isis Gill-Reid 6-4, knotting the doubles match at one apiece. Longwood would earn the first point with a doubles-point clinching win at No. 3 singles from Maria Coronel and Alex Brown, 6-4 over Olivia Lacy-Thompson and Scarlett Walston.
The Patriots top singles player Pilkington opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Burger to tie the match. Matches No. 3 to 5 would go to the Lancers in straight sets.
Two matches were decided in the tiebreaker set. At No. 2 Mason's Sydney Green won the first set 6-2, but Anna Pelak would rally for the Lancers and win the next two sets. At No. 6 the Patriots Mina Saygi lost the first set 6-4, but would come back strong with a 6-0 win in the second set to then lose the tiebreaker 10-8.
The Patriots play host to CNU Saturday at 10 a.m.
