FAIRFAX, Va. – Forecasts for Saturday show rain drenching the area all day.
That won't be anything new for the George Mason women's lacrosse team – nor should it faze the Patriots.
Mason hosts Longwood at 2 p.m. on Saturday at George Mason Stadium (admission is free). There is an 80 percent chance of rain around the time of opening draw.
But the Patriots (2-2) have become accustomed to playing in less than ideal weather this season. Their original and season home opener against Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 24 was stopped twice due to lightning and later postponed until March 30 (4 p.m. at George Mason Stadium). Both games in Oregon last week were played in rain and the start Wednesday's game at home against Georgetown was delayed for nearly 90 minutes because of inclement weather.
Mason hopes to bounce back from a 15-12 loss to Georgetown on Wednesday. The Patriots led early in the second half before the Hoyas scored seven unanswered goals. Jacquelyn Spalding, Brooke Lorber and Alexa McGovern each notched hat tricks. But Mason could not rally from the deficit, falling at home for the first time since March 18, 2015, snapping a winning streak of five straight games.
Longwood (4-4) has won four of its last five, including a 25-6 victory at Saint Mary's on March 10 in their last game out. The Lancers are led by Sarah Butler, who has 24 goals and 19 assists.
This will be the fourth meeting between Longwood and Mason, with the previous three contests coming in the last three years. The Patriots hold a 2-1 record and have won the last two meetings, which both went into overtime. Mason defeated Longwood 13-12 in triple overtime on March 2, 2014 on a golden goal by Rachel Obregon, who is now in her first year as a volunteer assistant coach with the Patriots.
