EUGENE, Ore. – With a veteran setting the tone offensively and a rookie stepping up in goal, the George Mason women's lacrosse team ended their spring break trip on a winning note.
Jacquelyn Spalding scored four goals and had two assists and goalkeeper
Elizabeth Benedetto shined in her college debut as the Patriots defeated Fresno State 12-5 on Friday night in a neutral-site contest at the University of Oregon.
Spalding, who led the team in goals and assists last year, had her best game so far in 2016. The All-Atlantic 10 Conference selection scored a season-best four goals, with two in each half. She also dished out two assists in the second half for six points – the most by a Patriot this season.
Benedetto, a freshman from Fairfax, made her first career start. She made nine saves while facing 16 shots and posting a .643 save percentage.
Mason (2-1) controlled most of the game in the first meeting between the teams. After Fresno State (3-4) jumped ahead first, Spalding got the Patriots' offense going.
Spalding,
Chachi Kelehan and
Melissa Lobaccaro each scored for three goals in less than two minutes to put the Patriots in front. They wouldn't trail from there and led 5-2 at halftime. Spalding again led the charge, kickstarting a flurry as Mason scored four of five goals to take a commanding 10-4 lead with less than 10 minutes to go.
Hannah Warpinski and Kelehan each scored twice and
Jordan Sdanowich,
Lindsey Tangeman,
Lydia Montanino and Lobacarro also added goals. The Patriots also won 11 draw controls, collected 20 ground balls and forced Fresno State into 15 turnovers.
After playing two games in Oregon, the Patriots return home to Fairfax this week. They'll host crosstown foe Georgetown at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at George Mason Stadium.
