EUGENE, Ore. – Unfortunately, Melissa Lobaccaro's goal turned out to be a footnote and not a game-changer.
Lobaccaro scored with two seconds left in the first half to tie the game but the momentum failed to carry over into the second half for the George Mason women's lacrosse team. Oregon scored four unanswered goals out of the break and never looked back, handing the Patriots a 15-9 loss on Wednesday night.
The Patriots (1-1) suffered their first loss of the season despite leading most of the first half. Mason led 3-1 less than 10 minutes in and held a one-goal lead with 4:52 before halftime. But that would be the last time the Patriots were in front. The Ducks (4-2) scored two goals within a little more than a minute to take their first lead of the game.
It looked like Oregon would head into halftime ahead, but Lobaccaro had other plans. After a yellow card on Oregon with four seconds left, Lobaccaro netted a free position attempt as time expired for a 6-6 tie at halftime.
The Ducks, however, were the aggressors in the second half. They scored four times in the opening 10 minutes of the period. Mason couldn't get closer than three goals after that.
Brooke Lorber scored a career-high three goals and added an assist to lead the Patriots. Lobaccaro scored twice and Alexa McGovern, Hannah Warpinski, Jacquelyn Spalding and Chachi Kelehan each had a goal. Mackenzie Duffy, the Atlantic 10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week, had nine saves in goal.
The Patriots stay out in Eugene, Ore., to play Fresno State in a neutral-site contest at 7 p.m. on Friday.
