The Mason men's tennis team opened the spring season on Saturday with a 7-0 loss in the hands of the 16th ranked University of Mary Washington at the UMW Indoor Tennis Center.
Mary Washington picked up the doubles point after taking wins at the one and three spots, giving UMW a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. The Patriots Tanner Baine and Daniel Gutierrez won their match at number two, 8-1.
The Patriots took the Eagles to several three set matches but couldn't get the wins as UMW swept the singles play. At the top position, Mason's Aaron Capitel won the first set against Gilmore, but dropped the next two, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Joe Hill battled back after losing the first set 6-3, to win the second 6-4 at the #2 spot, but Lunding-Johansson finished the third with a 6-0 win. Andrew Curtis and Wesley Wong each only won their second sets to drop their matches.
Mason will be back on the courts next week in Atlantic 10 action against Dayton and Duquesne in Pittsburgh.
