The Patriot women's tennis team battled Richmond Friday night but fell short by a 2-5 score at Monclair Country Club.
The Spiders earned the doubles point by edging the Patriots in three very close doubles matches. The Mason top team of Sydney Green and Brittany Pilkington lost 5-7, while the #2 team, Morgan Yang and Marijke Boers, and the #3 team, Olivia Lacy-Thompson and Scarlett Walston, both lost in tie-breakers.
"Our doubles played very tough today," commented Coach Stephen Curtis. "A couple of close points was the difference in all three of the doubles matches".
Yang and Green lost in straight sets to put Richmond up 3-0. Boers fought for a three set victory over Brittany Boys to earn the first point for Mason.
With the Patriots down 1-3 Pilkington played two tough, close sets but fell 5-7, 5-7 to Anna Abadias. Lacy-Thompson fell in a third set tie-breaker to Kayta Salas. Mason's Esu Erdenebat scored a 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 victory over her Spider opponent, Ana Ramirez, to make it 2-5.
"We competed well against a very solid Spider team", add Curtis. "I was pleased with our overall performance today. We are making positive moves in the right direction."
The Patriots drop to 3-2 on the season as they travel to the U.S. Naval Academy tomorrow to take on the Midshipmen at 3:00 pm in the Brigadine Sports Complex
