FAIRFAX, Va. – Temperatures warmed up on Sunday, but before the George Mason men's and women's track and field teams could turn their attention to the outdoors, they had one final meet inside.
The Patriots capped off the indoor track season with the Mason Last Chance meet on Sunday at the Field House. The meet offered more than 400 competitors from 30 schools a chance to reach qualifying marks for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
On the men's side, freshman Rico Gomez led the Patriots by winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.04. Senior Victoria Doss also collected a first-place finish with a time of 5:12.95 in the mile.
Fresh off winning her third straight Atlantic 10 Conference championship, senior Lindsay Horton cleared a personal-best mark of four meters and was the top collegiate performer in the pole vault. Freshman Kendra West had a breakout day with a pair of sixth-place finishes. She tossed for a mark of 11.82 meters in the shot put and 14.23 meters in the weight throw. Senior Lauren Givens also set a personal best with a time of 2:19.85 in the 800-meter dash to finish second among collegiate runners.
Both teams now get a three-week break before the outdoor season begins the weekend of March 18-19. The student-athletes will split up and compete at the William & Mary Tribe Open in Williamsburg, Va., and the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla.
“By and large it will be good for us to head for a small break and get ready for outdoors,” head coach Andrew Gerard said.
