George Mason Provost Scholar Athletes were honored at a reception on campus and recognized at the men's basketball game against VCU this week for their outstanding academic achievements. In its eighth year, the award recognizes the student-athletes who have earned at least 38 credit hours at Mason and have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or better.
George Mason Provost Emeritus Dr. Peter Stearns, who created the Provost Scholar Athlete Award in 2009, was at the reception and the basketball game to congratulate this year's recipients. A reception was held on Tuesday, February 23 at Merten Hall for the 41 student-athlete award-winners, along with their parents, select deans, professors, and senior athletic administrators.
The number of award-winners continues to increase and is up nine from last year, including 19 repeat winners. Four student-athletes earned their third straight award; Aaron Capitel, Jennifer Nakamura, Sarah Solano and Mariah Sutton. For the first time, honorees included two fourth year recipients; Stuart Lampen-Crowell (track and field) and Kelli Beard (lacrosse).
