Swimming and Diving to Host Annual Patriot Invitational

The Patriots Finish Sixth at the A-10 Swimming and Diving Championships

Fairfax, Va. – The George Mason swimming and diving team finished competition at the Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships in Geneva, Ohio, with the women's team in sixth place (345 points) and the men's team also in sixth place (396). 

On the final day in the pool on the women's side, the Patriots made it to the podium twice.  Junior Steff Maurer took bronze in the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.67).  In the 200-yard breaststroke, junior Sarah Brallier won bronze (2:15.70) and sophomore Allison Barahona placed sixth (2:18.24). 

Mason swimmers just missed a spot on the podium in three events.  In the 100-yard freestyle, senior Sydney Fisher finished in fourth place (50.49).  Sophomore Dorothy Reilly placed fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.17) and the combination of freshman Marla Albanese, sophomore Rachel Williams, Fisher and Maurer swam to a fourth place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:24.25). 

Freshman Christina McLemore finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly consolation finals (2:04.51). 

On the men's side the Patriots 400-yard freestyle relay team finished with bronze, just behind Saint Louis and Massachusetts.  Junior's Jesse Burnley and Zepher Begnell, and sophomore's Vadim Jacobson and Alec Morin found their way to the podium (2:59.65).  

In the 100-yard freestyle event, sophomore Alec Morin finished in fifth place (45.28), Burnley was sixth (45.42) and Begnell touched the wall in eighth (46.15).  Junior Ryan Frayne was first in the 200-yard breaststroke consolation finals. 

In the distance event, sophomore Steven Craig posted a sixth place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle (15:54.15). 

The University of Richmond women's team claimed their sixth straight A-10 title and 15th Atlantic 10 Championship in the last 16 years (653.5 points).  Duquesne was second (487 points) and Davidson finished third (466). 

The University of Massachusetts men's team defended their title (671 points) and won the A-10 Championship for the 16th time overall.  St. Bonaventure finished in second place (482 points) and La Salle was third (473.5).
