Fairfax, Va. - With one day of competition remaining at the Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships, both the Mason women's team (222 points) and men's team (281 points) are in sixth place.
On the women's side on day three, junior Sydney Fisher found her way to the podium by taking the silver medal in the 100-yard butterfly (53.92). Fisher finished second behind Fordham's Shannon Lulley who set a pool and Atlantic 10 record in the event (53.42).
Sophomore Dorothy Reilly posted a sixth place finish in the 400-yard individual medley (4:24.77). Junior Steff Maurer finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.30). Senior Shannon Slate cut through the waves to a third place finish in the consolation finals of the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.29).
In the women's 400-yard medley relay, the group of Fisher, Maurer, Reilly and Slate finished in fifth place.
On the men's side, sophomore Steven Craig just missed a spot on the podium with a fourth place finish in the 400-yard individual medley (3:57.02), while junior Brandon Nestor finished first in the consolation finals in the event (3:59.87).
Junior Jesse Burnley took home the bronze medal in the 200-yard freestyle (1:38.46). In the 100-yard butterfly, Alec Morin swam to a first place finish in the consolation finals (49.34). Mason swimmers put up solid numbers in the consolation finals of the 100-yard breaststroke with senior Jackson Hannam finishing second, junior Evan Owens third and junior Ryan Frayne fourth.
In the deep end of the pool, junior Trevor Long was second in the consolation finals of the 3-meter dive (233.10).
The defending Atlantic 10 men's and women's champions continue to hold down the top spots after day three. Massachusetts leads on the men's side with 472 points, while Richmond has the lead on the women's side with 428 points.
The final day of action for the 2016 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships is Saturday, February 20 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, with the preliminary rounds beginning at 10:00am and the finals at 6:30pm.
