FAIRFAX, Va. – With fall ball coming to an end, the George Mason women's lacrosse team have tabbed its team leaders for the upcoming season.

Senior midfielders Brooke Lorber and Alexa McGovern were chosen as team captains for the 2017 season in a recent vote by the team. Lorber led the Patriots in assists last season while McGovern was the team leader in goals and draw controls.

"I think they are players who have developed well in this system that we've created," head coach Jessy Morgan said. "Brooke is a kid who had to overcome injury and has come a long way with that. We're looking for her to be the quarterback of our offense. Alexa has really emerged as one of our dynamic players. But she didn't start there.

"I like that it is two players who had to overcome adversity and can relate to other people on the team and show them what's possible when you work hard and stick to something and follow a system. You can be successful. I'm glad they've grown into leaders."

Lorber, a unanimous choice as team captain, is coming off a breakout season.

After tearing her ACL and sitting out the 2015 season, the Bel Air, Md., native emerged as the team's top distributor in 2016. She led the team with 23 assists, including a career-high five against La Salle to tie for second-most in a single game in program history. She also scored 21 goals to finish with 44 points – fourth-most on the team. She was also named a Provost Scholar Athlete for the second straight year and was tabbed to the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Academic Team.

McGovern, a Sykesville, Md., native, has earned Atlantic 10 First Team All-Conference and VaSID All-State Second Team honors each of the last two seasons. In 2016, the midfielder led the team with 41 goals and 46 draw controls. Her 41 goals are the eighth-most in a single season in program history and the most since 2008. She tied a career high with five (on five shots) against St. Bonaventure last year.

Her seven draw controls against Oregon tied the school record for most draws in a game. She has won 111 draws in three years to rank second all-time at Mason. She needs just eight draw controls to become the program's all-time leader.

The Patriots are coming off a 12-5 season in which they tied the school record for most wins in a season, tied for second place in the Atlantic 10 and received a first-round bye in the A-10 Tournament for the first time. Mason opens the 2017 season at William & Mary on Feb. 18.
