FAIRFAX, Va. – Two members of the George Mason swimming and diving teams earned weekly honors from CollegeSwimming.com on Tuesday. Mason senior Sydney Fisher was named women's swimmer of the week, while freshman Attila Kiss was selected men's swimmer of the week.
Fisher, a native of Richmond, Va., set three meet and team records during the 2016 Patriot Invitational held Nov. 17-19 at the Jim McKay Natatorium.
On the first day of competition, Fisher took first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.70), breaking her own record time of 22.73. Less than 24 hours later on day two, she broke her own record in the 100-yard butterfly twice. She dominated in the preliminaries with a time of 53.57 and then won the event later in the day with a time of 53.10.
Fisher then set an event and team record in the 100-yard freestyle on the final day of competition, posting a time of 49.67 to help the Mason women's team to a third-place finish in the meet.
She received NCAA B consideration times in all three events. In the NCAA, Fisher ranks 20th in the 100-yard butterfly, 48th in the 50-yard freestyle and 62nd in the 100-yard freestyle.
Kiss, from Miskolc, Hungary, won the 500-yard freestyle (4:29.70) and placed second in the 1,650-yard freestyle (15:47.32) during the Patriot Invitational. His times in both events rank first in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Kiss is the second-fastest freshman and ranks fifth overall in program history. He ranks seventh on Mason's all-time performers list in the 1,650-yard freestyle.
Select Patriot swimmers will compete next in the Winter National Championships in Atlanta, Ga. from Thursday, Dec. 1 through Saturday, Dec. 3 in the final competition of the 2016 portion of the schedule.
