ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The George Mason men's and women's swimming and diving teams were defeated by Navy and UMBC in a Tri-Meet on Friday in Lejeune Hall at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
The Mason women's team fell to Navy 187-106 and to UMBC 207-93. The Patriots men's team suffered a 218.5-81.5 loss to the Mids and a 208-92 loss to the Retrievers.
Senior Sydney Fisher finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (23.40) and second in the 100-yard freestyle (52.02). Fisher's times in those events lead the conference. Senior Steff Maurer, junior Rachel Williams, sophomore Marla Albanese and Fisher combined for a fourth place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:35.55).
Maurer was also third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.20) and placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.33), while junior Amy Tansill notched a fifth place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.25).
Senior Sarah Brallier took second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.21), while junior Allison Barahona finished fourth in the event (2:23.58).
Junior Dorothy Reilly recorded a third place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.11) and senior Erin Schulte placed sixth in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:44.66). The combination of Fisher, Tansill, Albanese and Maurer touched the wall fourth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.75).
On the men's side, Mason freshman Attila Kiss earned an individual event win with a first place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:37.71) and was fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.45). Freshman Christopher Stankiewicz finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.96) and classmate Ryan Donnelly had a fifth place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (52.59).
Senior Zepher Begnell swam to a second place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (21.06). His time in the event is currently best in the conference. Begnell combined with junior Alec Morin, freshman Logan Eubanks and Stankiewicz for a third place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (1:33.99). Morin was also fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (46.52).
Junior Steven Craig registered a third place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:38.25). Senior Paul Helfgott placed third in the three-meter springboard diving event with a score of 258.45 and was fourth in the one-meter event with a score of 269.15.
The Patriots host their first home meet of the season when they swim against Delaware on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. in the Jim McKay Natatorium.
