FAIRFAX, Va. – Three members of the George Mason swimming and diving teams earned weekly awards from the Atlantic 10 Conference on Tuesday. Senior Paul Helfgott was named the men's Performer of the Week, senior Sydney Fisher was selected as the women's Performer of the Week, while freshman Attila Kiss was tabbed the men's Rookie of the Week.
Mason swept Delaware in its first home meet of the season on Saturday at the Jim McKay Natatorium. The women's team defeated the Blue Hens 167-127 and the men's team recorded a 184-114 victory.
Helfgott, from Annandale, Va., won both boards during the meet. He posted a score of 281.33 to win the one-meter springboard diving event by 72 points and posted a score of 298.35 to win the three-meter by 79 points.
Fisher, a native of Richmond, Va., swept two individual events against Delaware, finishing first in the 50-yard freestyle (23.40) and 100-yard butterfly (55.26). She won the 100-yard butterfly by over two seconds and the 50-yard freestyle by under a second. Fisher swam the breaststroke leg of Mason's winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:46.00) and was also part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:37.60) that placed first.
Kiss, from Miskolc, Hungary, was impressive in his home debut. He posted a time of 4:38.05 to win the 500-yard freestyle by nearly two seconds. Kiss was second in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.55) and 1,000-yard freestyle (9:33.99), finishing less than a second back in each race.
The Patriots are back in the pool Oct. 21-22 against Richmond, Duquesne and Davidson at the Richmond Duals in Richmond, Va.
