Patriots Complete Strong Showing on Day Two of Richmond Duals

RICHMOND, Va. – The George Mason men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded the Richmond Duals, with the men's team defeating Davidson 125-80 on Saturday for an overall two-day score of 230-180 over the Wildcats.  The Mason women's team fell to Duquesne 156-131 on Saturday.

Senior Sydney Fisher won two individual events for the women's team, finishing first in the 50-yard freestyle (23.92) and the 100-yard butterfly (56.33). 

Senior Erin Schulte placed second in the 1,650 freestyle (17:55.57) with classmate Megan DeJongfinishing fifth in the event (18:10.87).  Schulte also recorded and second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.56).

Junior Dorothy Reilly earned second place finishes for the Patriots in both the 100-yard butterfly (57.98) and 200-yard butterfly (2:06.01).  She posted a fourth place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.84).

In the 200-yard breaststroke, senior Sarah Brallier registered a fourth place finish (2:24.08).

The combination of junior Amy Tansill, senior Steff Maurer, Reilly and Fisher took second in the 400-yard medley relay (3:54.31).  Junior Rachel Williams, sophomore Marla Albanese, Maurer and Fisher swam to a third place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.78).  Maurer also made the podium with a third place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (54.08).

The Mason men's team won seven individual events and both relays against Davidson on Saturday.

Freshman Attila Kiss won the 500-yard freestyle (4:37.68), with junior Steven Craig finishing third in the event (4:39.85).  In the 400-yard IM, Mason took three of the top-four spots.  Craig claimed the top spot (4:07.18), while Kiss was third (4:09.86) and freshman Garrett Anderson came in fourth (4:10.96).

Freshman Christopher Stankiewicz touched the wall first in the 50-yard breaststroke (26.76), with senior Evan Owens finishing third for the Patriots (27.49).

Junior Alec Morin was first in the 50-yard butterfly (23.26) and classmate Matthew Lynch posted a first place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (51.60).

Freshman Logan Eubanks placed second in the 50-yard backstroke (24.70), with classmate Ryan Donnelly finishing in third place (24.94).  The duo also finished side-by-side in the 100-yard backstroke, with Eubanks taking second (52.57) and Donnelly third (52.78).

The 400-yard medley relay team of Donnelly, Stankiewicz, Lynch and Morin took first place (3:26.66.).  The combination of senior Zepher Begnell, Owens, Stankiewicz and Morin recorded a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:24.11).

For the second straight day, senior Paul Helfgott took first place in the diving event.  He posted a score of 245.40 to win the three-meter springboard.  Mason freshman Joe Amato was second with a score of 219.20.

The Patriots return to the pool at the Jim McKay Natatorium, hosting Towson and Northeastern on Friday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 5 at 10 a.m.
