Fairfax, Va.- The George Mason University wrestling team displayed a positive effort despite falling to Eastern Wrestling League foe Rider. Redshirt sophomore Ibrahim Bunduka(125) earned a decision victory for Mason, but the Patriots would lose by the final score of, 32-3.
The dual started at the 157 pound weight division and Mason was unable to get off to a customary strong start. Redshirt freshman Matt Voss(HWT) battled valiantly but eventually lost in overtime, 6-4.
Rider boasted a starting lineup consisting of three top 20 wrestlers in the country according to intermat.com. #18 B.J. Clagon(149), #12 Chad Walsh(157) and #20 Conor Brennan(165) were all victorious today, which made the task of defeating the Broncs that much more difficult.
Redshirt senior captain Vince Rodriguez(133) and redshirt senior Blake Roulo(149) were both competitive in their individual matches but were unable to earn victories. Rodriguez lost, 4-2 while Roulo lost by a single point in the final match of the dual, 4-3.
“We need to find a way to win the tough situations,” head coach Joe Russell said. “Nevertheless, I believe our effort was impressive.”
Mason finishes their weekend road trip with a 1-1 record and the team now sits at 6-8 overall, 1-3 in the EWL. The schedule does not get any easier for the Patriots as they will travel to face Navy in Annapolis for a Wednesday dual before returning to the RAC in Fairfax for a home dual against EWL rival Bloomsburg.
