Mason Wrestling Falls in Back to Back Duals

Fairfax, Va.- George Mason University's wrestling team was defeated in back to back duals against Cleveland State and Edinboro, 21-16 and 31-7, respectively. Mason had strong efforts from redshirt senior captain Vince Rodriguez(133) and redshirt freshman Tejon Anthony(141), as both went 2-0 on the day.

With the losses, Mason drops to 5-7 on the season and 1-2 in the Eastern Wrestling League.

The dual against Cleveland State started with the 197 pound division and Mason found themselves down 8-0 after two matches. The Patriots then took three straight matches from the Vikings, as redshirt sophomore Ibrahim Bunduka(125), Rodriguez and Anthony were victorious, 13-8, 11-5 and 5-2, respectively. This was the second straight dual where those three Patriots won each of their matches by decision.

Another similarity to Mason's most recent dual, was that redshirt senior captain Greg Flournoy(157) and redshirt junior Patrick Davis(165) both won matches back to back. Flournoy won by major decision, 16-5, and Davis won by decision, 10-4, to put the Patriots ahead of the Vikings, 16-14 overall.

That would be the final lead of the dual for Mason, as the team would lose their last two matches. Although the Patriots lost, the team can take solace in the fact that they went 5-5 in the dual and only lost due to bonus points earned by the Vikings.

In Mason's second dual of the day, the Patriots got off to an early lead, 7-3, thanks to two victories by Rodriguez and Anthony. Rodriguez earned a major decision victory, 12-2, while Anthony earned his second decision victory of the day, 5-2.

The fatigue then started to show for the Patriots as they were unable to muster another team point out of the remaining seven matches. Davis had the closest match but wound up losing by decision, 4-0.

Mason now has an incredibly important EWL dual against Lock Haven Jan. 22, in Fairfax. The Patriots will look to defeat the Bald Eagles and get back to a 2-2 record in conference play.
