Women's Tennis Begins Season with Two Wins at Mason Invitational

The Mason women's tennis team started strong and defended their home courts on Sunday by defeating Longwood and Christopher Newport in the weather shortened Mason Invitational.

After being rained out on Saturday the Patriots came out quickly Sunday morning by sweeping the doubles matches against the Lancers to go up four to zero in the 12 point mock dual format. Mason then followed that by taking seven of the eight singles matches to close out Longwood 11-1.

After a short break the Patriots took on DIII powerhouse Christopher Newport. Mason again started strong in the doubles by taking three of the four doubles points. The Captains were only able to win two of the eight singles to give the Patriots a 9-3 decision.

"I was pleased with our performance today," commented Coach Steve Curtis. "This was a good early season barometer for our team. It showed us areas where we still need work but showed us some positives as well. Our three freshmen that played today had a wonderful first outing in their Mason colors."

Both the men's and the women's teams will travel to Fredericksburg next weekend to participate in the Mary Washington Fall Kick-Off.
